I have also started a new project, which is the weekly plotted zine. I obviously do not know what I am doing and, worst, I am encountering the same issue as always, which is that I simultaneously want to write about my life and mysticism, and I somehow cannot bring myself to share that stuff because it feels too personal.
So perhaps this could be the very first issue of my WPZ: Getting Personal.
Tensions that arose as I was trying to create the first daily comic:
1. I don’t like the characters I draw
2. I don’t like my handwriting, I find it too illegible
3. Tension between going fast, recording my life “in the midst of things” and taking the time to make something good (which requires ritual, time, effort and concentration)
4. Realization that I need a script and that scripts are written, not drawn
5. Once the script is written, the stuff does not feel as urgent anymore and I don’t want to draw it/complete it
6. Thoughts such as: you’ll never finish this, you’re too scattered, you don’t know how to draw, etc. etc.
7. There does not seem to be enough time in the day for creation, school work and exercise.
Here are potential solutions to these tensions:
#1 and #2 have to do with practice. But I can only practice if I dedicate the time, if I prioritize this project, if I see it as a source worth investing in. For that, it needs to be better woven into my school work, and also needs to be something that I share. #3, #4 and #5 also have to do with the tension between journaling and creating something for the world to see, which has always been my issue. The stuff that I am interested in writing is personal and specific but I don’t want to share personal and specific stuff. So maybe I use a disguise. Maybe I write the story of an alchemist. Or perhaps I divide it into several projects.
I just need to start producing stuff. Make a content calendar. Write. Draw. Collect material. And make it.
Below are just a random collection of random drawings I made in the last few days + inspiration from other artists and creators (Matissie, Nina Cosford, Hans Ulrich Obrist, ...) + pictures from my work.
